Traditional Shaman Balinese Theater Mask

Made by the Sutahara family in Bali, Indonesia. This traditional theater mask measures 5.5" x7" mask alone, with hair 11.5" x 16". It is made of wood and horse hair and is finely painted in detail. This mask is designed to be worn during Balinese ceremony. The mask has a skullcap made of woven bamboo and eyeslits carved into the face so that the wearing can move freely.

The mask is based on the tradition of Balinese Hinduism. Bali Hindu has roots in Indian Hinduism, Buddhism and indiginous animistic customs. The balinese believe that that the gods and goddesses are present in all things. Every element of nature, therefore, possesses its own power, which reflects the power of the gods. A rock, tree, dagger, or even a mask is a potential home for spirits whose energy can be directed for good or evil.
